Star2 Redefines Boundaries and Narrative Rap on “20-Something (In Love)”

Riding the wave of success after releasing the smash hit “M.O.B.” and the incredible visualizer for “Never Again,” Asian American rapper Star2 is delivering “20-Something (In Love)” in collaboration with Young Henny.

Along with long-time creative partner Young Henny, the album brings together collaborators ChinatownRunner, Ler Mu Dex, Lil BK, and Seko, adding distinct voices to Star2’s latest project.

Featuring Chinatown Runner, “Fast Lane” stands out as one of the album’s highlights, driven by catchy verses and confident rap performances. “Cali” takes a slower, more intimate approach, offering a quieter listen without losing its energy. Its restrained pace gives the track room to build, proving that a softer delivery can still carry plenty of weight.

“123 Tell Me” stands apart from the rest of the album, with acoustic guitar playing a prominent role throughout. The track channels the feel of an early 2000s pop anthem, with its nostalgic quality giving it an especially memorable edge. “Want To Know,” featuring John Aye, is a blend of many elements, taking alt rock influences and pairing them with R&B vocals to create a delightful atmosphere. The song is short and sweet, hitting exactly the right spot. In the deeply moving ballad “YoYo Poe” with Lil BK, piano takes center stage. Delivered in Star2's native language, the track stands out as a distinct centerpiece on the project.

As Star2 puts it, the album is for anyone trying to figure things out, wherever they may be in life. Built alongside a tight-knit family of creative voices, the project captures late-night longing, romantic uncertainty, and the grit needed to move forward. Beyond the standout tracks, the record is packed with memorable moments that highlight how deeply collaborative the entire endeavor turned out to be.

The personal histories behind “20-Something (In Love)” add another dimension to the project. Star2 was born in a Thai refugee camp before moving to San Diego with his grandmother and her four children through a lottery that selected families for relocation. He later developed his career under producer Chico Bennett and has worked with Soulja Boy, $tupid Young, Mozzy, MBNel, Luh Kel, Lil Poppa, HoodTrophy Bino, YSN Flow, and MarMar Oso. His YouTube series, Adventures of Star2, follows his life when he is away from the road.

Young Henny brings his own history to the album. Born Mookpolosoe in the Nu Po refugee camp, he arrived in Akron, Ohio, at nine years old after his family fled the Burmese military. Music became part of his life through a local church, where he learned guitar and drums and eventually led worship. He later moved to Denver after his father’s death and crossed paths with Star2, Ler Mu Dex, and ChinatownRunner. Their connection eventually brought him to San Diego to work on the album. Today, Henny lives in Minnesota with his family and continues to draw on his experiences in his music.

"20-Something (In Love)" leaves room for different sides of Star2's sound to coexist, moving between rap, R&B, rock influences, acoustic textures, and a more intimate approach to storytelling. The album’s range never loses sight of its emotional core, giving each collaboration space to shape the project while keeping Star2’s perspective at the center.
