Some songs are about getting through difficult times. Others are about the people who make getting through them possible. Anberlin's latest single, “TRENCHES,” falls into the latter, bringing longtime friends Switchfoot into the picture for a collaboration centered on the reassurance that even life's hardest moments don't have to be faced alone.
Released October 15, the single arrives as the two bands share the road and Anberlin prepares for the release of CURRENCY, their ninth studio album and first full-length project with Matty Mullins as lead vocalist.
For Mullins, the message behind “TRENCHES” comes from the perspective of someone who has already experienced their own struggles and recognizes that same pain in another person.
“It's written from the perspective of someone who's survived their own pain and is reaching back to say, ‘I've been where you are, and I'll stand beside you until you make it through,’” Mullins explains.
The collaboration follows previously released singles “GRAVITY” and “NEVERAFTER,” each introducing another piece of an album that explores what happens when the things you've built your life around begin to fall apart.
Although Mullins made his recording debut with Anberlin on two tracks from 2024's Vega, CURRENCY offers a more complete introduction to his role within the band. Produced alongside Kellen McGregor of Memphis May Fire, the eleven-track record incorporates previously unfinished songs while allowing Mullins to bring his own perspective to the material.
Nearly 25 years into their career, Anberlin is navigating a considerable change without abandoning the music and history that brought them here. With Switchfoot joining them both in the studio and on tour, “TRENCHES” carries an additional sense of familiarity, bringing two longtime contemporaries together around a message that extends beyond either band's individual story.
CURRENCY arrives November 11 via Equal Vision Records, with Anberlin and Switchfoot continuing their tour throughout the fall.
