Eli Derby's new single steps away from the disposable relationships and emotional disconnection that characterize contemporary R&B. With “Pretty Girl Dangerous,” his debut single under the ART@WAR/Warner Records label, the Maryland-born multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter puts his voice and electric guitar at the service of classic courtship to remind us that falling in love is still worth it.
“‘Pretty Girl Dangerous’ captures the thrill of being drawn to someone you know might be trouble, but wanting more anyway,” he assures. (...) “The song explores that irresistible pull toward someone who feels risky but impossible to resist. It felt honest and relatable from the moment we started making it, and that authenticity is what gives the record its energy.”
In the track, Eli establishes a direct dialogue with guest artist Bri3. While he opens the song with the impact of an inevitable infatuation, summarized in the phrase “Pretty girl dangerous / Seen a lot, none hit like this,” then Bri3 smoothly takes control of the first verse, turning the collaboration into a game of complicity where both artists challenge and complement each other.
Musically, the song balances two currents. On one hand, there is the nostalgia of productions that dominated R&B in the nineties and two-thousands. On the other hand, one can perceive the rawness and maturity of live instrumentation, which Eli commands to perfection.
Eli aims to show that it is okay to love without reservations, a commitment that shines through the warmth of his vocal performance. As the track progresses, the chemistry becomes more playful through a direct exchange of compliments like “You’re a star, baby girl...,” closing with an intimate atmosphere that prioritizes physical and emotional closeness over modern detachment.
Eli Derby’s “Pretty Girl Dangerous” confirms that, sometimes, the true avant-garde consists of looking back, rescuing the soul of the genre, and singing about love.
