Pi Jacobs Blends Americana With Resistance in “Nogales”

“Nogales,” the new single by singer-songwriter Pi Jacobs, feels organic and intentionally raw, so intimate that, with your eyes closed, you can almost picture the performer sitting near you, guitar in hand, stripped of unnecessary embellishments, and delivering a message that settles deep beneath the skin.

And for good reason. Raised in an environment where diversity was a way of life, the artist refuses to remain indifferent to what is happening in her country. Through a genre as personal and inclusive to her as Americana, she steps forward and turns her music into a form of protest.

“My new single, ‘Nogales,’ is a true story that happened to me on tour a few years ago. I found myself re-visiting the experience while watching the ICE raids happening all over our country. Not that these are equivocal stories by any means. My heart goes out to all those detained and killed and their loved ones,” the artist says.

The track resonates without relying on excessive sentimentality, using everyday situations to illustrate the absurdity.

Behind that direct honesty is also an artist who has spent more than two decades carving out a place within American roots music. Born in San Francisco’s iconic Haight-Ashbury district and raised among Northern California hippie communes, Pi Jacobs found comfort early on in a blend of country, blues, soul, and folk sounds that remain essential to her musical identity today.

Her story, shaped by a deeply multicultural and diverse upbringing, runs throughout much of her artistic work. The daughter of a Filipino father, with African American relatives and surrounded by alternative communities since childhood, Jacobs discovered in Americana a space where both musical and human boundaries could dissolve.

Drawing from that lifetime of experiences, her latest release vividly portrays the kind of fear that never fully goes away and that, for many, feels closer than ever right now.

Even while grounded in a powerful message that can feel harsh at times, “Nogales” succeeds by appealing to the listener’s empathy. Rather than leaning into furious criticism, Pi Jacobs places her faith in the kindness of people who can create change simply by opening their hearts and freeing their everyday lives from prejudice.
