Maya J’an Builds a World of Waiting, Wanting, and Wondering on “blindfaith county”
“blindfaith county” is not on any map. You drive there by accident, though most of us have passed through it before. Maybe we took a wrong turn while trying to get over someone, or maybe we stayed too long in a place that was only meant to be temporary.
The county has no exit signs. Instead, it is filled with familiar places. A cul-de-sac where you wait for a call that never comes, a bed where you hold onto someone without fully trusting them, a wishing spot where you toss coins while asking for the same thing every time. Maya J'an gives these emotions and experiences a name, then turns them into the foundation of her new EP, “blindfaith county.”
The residents of this emotional landscape share one defining trait. They keep believing, even when there is no clear reason to. Stopping would mean admitting they have been standing still for years. So they remain where they are, waiting for something to change, for their wishes to finally come true.
Maya spent years working behind the scenes as a songwriter. Her contributions helped earn last year’s JUNO Award for Aqyila’s “Bloom,” and she has collaborated with Pharrell, SAINt JHN, and Justine Skye. While those experiences strengthened her résumé, her more personal journal entries continued to pile up like postcards from a frozen town in emotional limbo. After sharing snippets of “cul-de-sac” with her audience on social media, the growing demand finally pushed her to step in front of her own microphone.
As intimate and personal as “blindfaith county” is, it also carries a sense of familiarity. The songs that resonate most will depend on the listener, but the record often feels like a transmission from a ghostly late-night radio station. Its stark Americana atmosphere seeps into the pop production like the constant hum of fluorescent convenience store lights.
Each song plays like a vignette from a life shaped by quiet despair, resignation, or emotional stagnation. At the same time, there is an undeniable sense of resilience running throughout the record, one rooted in adaptability, survival, and even a strange kind of enduring bravery. That emotional complexity makes “blindfaith county” feel deeply lived-in and worthy of the same care Maya J’an poured into creating it.
