Victoria Sol Shapes “EP 1” Around Downtempo Textures and Emotional Pop
The debut EP by Cuban-American artist Victoria Sol, “EP1,” brings together songs shaped by personal experience and a reflective perspective on grief, family memory, love, and the bond with one’s place of origin. The project marks the beginning of an artistic direction that combines electronic music, introspective pop, and emotional exploration.
The artist approaches voice, electronic production, and lyrics as tools for building atmospheres in which emotion leads and the music follows. Her perspective is also shaped by her academic background, having studied humanities at the University of California, Berkeley, and design at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.
Her style moves between electronic downtempo and experimental pop, built on a soft rhythmic foundation and vocals that feel both ethereal and intimate. The result is a melancholic, romantic, IDM-adjacent sound in which electronic beats coexist with a marked emotional sensitivity.
The EP was recorded independently during the pandemic, largely from her laptop as she learned to use Ableton. This home-production setting is reflected in songs that prioritize sonic texture over conventional pop structures. The project unfolds across three tracks, namely “self sabotaging sadness,” “diggers den,” and “ascent,” each carrying an intimate intensity while remaining subtle enough for listeners to see their own emotions in them.
At the heart of the project lies a personal story shaped by loss. Victoria Sol lost her brother in 2015, a cousin in 2016, and another cousin who was raised like her own brother in 2021. These experiences thread through the EP. They remain a constant presence, shaping a tone marked by melancholy, nostalgia, and introspection.
The musician's influences also help clarify the sound she develops on the EP as her approach echoes artists such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Judee Sill, Rosalía, and FKA twigs, musicians recognized for pairing sonic experimentation with emotionally direct writing.
With this first official release, Victoria Sol treats sound as a space for investigating and processing emotions. The songs allow complex feelings such as grief and love to exist without forced resolution. “EP 1” also points toward her next project, a debut album that will feature a stronger presence of guitars and a deeper exploration of songcraft.
