Matt Lange Builds “RECOVERY” From Loss, Memory, and Sound

“RECOVERY” is Matt Lange’s tenth studio album, which he has turned into a form of personal reconstruction. On the record, he reimagines songs by Nine Inch Nails, Sleep Token, Mazzy Star, and other artists to address a difficult period marked by professional losses, a failed relationship, and a physical injury.

Across 13 tracks, the album also offers insight into the different facets that have shaped his career. Lange lost his job twice after working as Head of Audio Content at Avid and Director of Partnerships at Fender. At the same time, he faced the end of a relationship and the consequences of a serious injury. As a result, writing and producing these songs became a form of catharsis.

Lange has worked as a solo artist, producer, composer, remixer, and sound designer, with credits ranging from albums by Thirty Seconds to Mars and Blake Lewis to film productions and franchises such as Fast & Furious, Deadpool, Transformers, and The Incredibles. That experience across songwriting, music for visual media, and sound design helped expand the album's technical scope.

Musically, “RECOVERY” combines elements of rock with electronic production. Lange uses his voice, instrumentation, and multiple layers of sound to reinforce the songs’ emotional weight. This combination reflects a career in which he has worked across several genres and taken on different roles, from composition and performance to studio production.

Lange produced, performed, and mixed the album in Dolby Atmos, giving him direct involvement in every stage of its creation. That control allowed him to determine how the vocals, instruments, and production layers should sound to express the emotions behind the project. It also helped the reimagined songs align with the sonic direction of his original compositions, allowing them to feel like part of the album.

Within a discography that began with “Altered Tensions (The Answer to the Question You Forgot to Ask)” in 2012 and includes projects such as Ephemera, Space Between, Dichotomy, Blossoming, and You Filthy Animal, “RECOVERY” holds a distinct place. It brings together the different professional roles Lange has inhabited while shifting the focus toward the person behind the producer, composer, and sound designer.

“RECOVERY” does not present healing as a finished process but as something built gradually. Lange created these songs to process the changes and losses he experienced, drawing on the knowledge he has gained throughout his career. By combining original compositions with versions of songs that were important to him, the album shows how music can also help someone understand a difficult period and give it new meaning.
