‘Like it that way’ from Adeline: One track to enjoy and lift yourself up

Adeline's goal is simple and she assures us that it was achieved with this EP: To Lift your spirits and make you feel better.

This girl - raised between Montreal, Tokyo, Singapore, Geneva and Copenhagen - is very clear in saying that to celebrate, you do not need a huge party, not even a huge reason. It is rather about enjoying the small steps and the small miracles that happen daily in our lives and our surroundings that truly justify and constitute the celebration.

All of this philosophy, so necessary and timely in times of pandemic and global crisis, was transfigured for Adeline into an EP that she called 'Like it that Way'. In it, you will find a wealth of deeply interesting lyrics presented with lighthearted, catchy sounds and lots of positive messages.

‘Like It That Way’ was released on the 9th of September 2022 and it includes contributions from renowned Montreal producers, Chris Vincent (Busty and the Bass), Lucas Liberatore (Planet Studios) and Bobby John (Serena Rider, Bobby Bazini, Olivier Dion), explores themes of self-love, empowerment, loss, love, celebration and mental health.

A pure party atmosphere reigns supreme on this track for Adeline, so turn up the volume on ‘Like it that Way’ and read the interview we have for you today.

Adeline you have just released an EP full of infectious melodies and classic pop hooks. But can you tell us what was your idea when you first started to think about a new EP? What did you want to convey?

I wanted to convey a feel-good energy & put forth the notion of “celebration” as a way of life! I don’t think we celebrate our little wins enough, we have the tendency to only wait for a massive event to take place, when truly, there are so many little successes and moments of gratitude that we can celebrate and recognize.

I also wanted the EP to reflect my playful & lighthearted personality and artistry. The overall sound and associated artwork is cheerful and colourful; even the cover art itself is bold but playful. And I feel the music really reflects this balance! Lastly, I wanted to convey the importance of mental health. My academic background is in neuroscience and mental health and so, if I can pair my music with a meaningful message on choosing gratitude & self-love, I’m really proud of that!

And could you say that you achieved the goal?

Yes! I’ve gotten great feedback from it.

Do you think there is a common thread that amalgamates the entire album as a whole? Or that wasn’t your intention?

As a whole, the common thread to this EP is that it is uplifting. There is a vulnerability yet a boldness in lyrics, sound choices and textures, but also colours. Each single has its own world and colour palette, but they all gather to reflect different facets of our experiences & personality.

Musically, how would you define this new release?

Upbeat, vibrant, bouncy, thoughtful, melodic: it’s pop with touches of soul and folk.

What challenges did you face during the making of this compilation?

Yes, bringing an idea to life is always met with resistance and obstacles. It’s tough to push through when you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, but once the final product is out, it’s always worth it!

or example: the EP has been delayed due to recording studio closures. Also, it is a challenge to achieve the right sound for each song, in order to translate the desired emotion and atmosphere. There are also a lot of problem-solving skills required in videography, video editing, logistics and the day of: on set, when we’re shooting!

People might think that an album is an easy thing to do, but it's not, there are a lot of people working behind it. Tell us about the team that accompanied you on this project.

I recorded this EP with multiple trusted producers in Montreal. I’m very involved in the production and mixing process and enjoy choosing and fine-tuning each sound for the songs. I also collaborated with 3 different videography teams for each music video, as well as local photographers and graphic designers to create associated visual content. I’m very passionate about the holistic combination of art mediums and am eager to translate my music into visual experiences, therefore, I find it creatively stimulating to collaborate with other artists.

There is a phrase of yours that I really liked because it seems very powerful and timely. You said that "we have the incredible power to choose and nurture the thoughts in our mind and, although it is a challenge, it is particularly important to ensure that these thoughts and our words uplift us". Would you say that music is a useful vehicle to uplift people? Why?

Absolutely! Most of the music I listen to is upbeat, catchy and uplifting. I really believe music heavily influences your mood and emotions, therefore I’m very mindful of this. I seek music to encourage and uplift me, and that’s the kind of music I like and aim to create!

Could you choose your 3 favorite songs from the EP?

“Like it that way” is a song that is very dear to me in its essence & meaning. It is both fun & lighthearted yet profound and thought-provoking, and I’m proud of that balance. Hence, I chose it as the title track of the EP.

The “Latino Remix” is also a very bright and a fun one! It’ll get you dancing, no matter the time of day!

“Higher” is also a favourite –  the lyrics are profound, yet the production is light and bouncy. I also think the music video is very special as well, as it has warm tones and overlooks my hometown of Montreal.

If you could choose an artist to perform on stage with you with one of the songs from this EP, who will it be?

I’ve got 2 features on this EP so I definitely enjoy and plan on performing with them. In terms of dream collab – I would probably choose Kygo - sunshine and upbeat vibes!

Do you have tour plans?

I’m planning on showcasing the EP around my hometown of Montreal in various restaurants and bars / clubs over the next couple months!
