Impossible not “Falling In Love” with Kendall Amon

Kendall Amon is an L.A singer/songwriter who continues to prove herself as a powerfully affecting and deeply touching artist. Her latest single “Falling in Love” is a song that focuses on the optimistic side of love.

Four of her other tracks were hand-picked by Director Brian K. Roberts to be part of his movie's soundtrack “Ten Truths About Love”. So you can certainly stamp the "cinematic" seal of approval

Music is a passion that she was about to put aside to pursue a safer career with less risk of failure. However -and happily- the pandemic confronted her with her true desires, and today, she walks tall as an artist and conquers new followers each day with her songs.

In this conversation we had with her, she told us some of her anecdotes, her perfect days, her aspirations for the future, and one or another juicy detail about her tastes. So read and enjoy.

1.- We would like to know about your beginnings in music, your studies, and the moment your decided it was your passion.

I’ve been interested in singing and music since I can remember. When I was around 5 or 6, I would even sing along to songs playing in grocery stores hoping to be “discovered”.

So my parents got me into vocal lessons and piano lessons when I was 7 years old to focus all that energy. My first performance was in 4th grade when I sang “Our Song” by Taylor Swift at my elementary school talent show, and I just loved it. I loved performing and learning new songs on the piano, so my passion for music just grew from there.

I was also encouraged by my vocal coach and my piano teacher to start writing songs when I was 13 or 14 years old. I still love looking back at those songs because they’ll always have a special place in my heart, and it's incredible to see how my songwriting has grown. I think I’ve always used music and writing as a way to work through different emotions and make sense of myself and the world around me.

It’s profoundly personal, so there was a time in my life when I wasn’t sure if I was brave enough to share that with the world. As I matured and especially during the pandemic, I found myself writing more music than I ever had in the past. I became acutely aware that music is an important way of connecting with people, and I realized that I wanted to pursue this passion.

Since then, I’ve been writing more music and collaborating with other talented writers and producers, which has only helped me grow as an artist. And even though it's not always easy, I took a leap of faith, and it's been incredibly rewarding.

2.- “Falling in love” is a love song that keeps much of your personal style but you also said it was a challenge for you as it focuses on a different aspect than the ones you usually write about. How did you conceive it? What was your inspiration?

I wrote Falling in Love in January of 2021 and had it produced by Neara Russell in March of that same year. I love romantic books, tv shows, and movies, so I decided to write a song that focused on a more optimistic side of love using some of those classic romance tropes. It was super fun to write a song with such narrative elements because I built this story in my head about how it feels to fall hopelessly in love with a best friend. It’s filled with sweet little details of how I imagined love should be, and I find myself listening to it whenever I want to hear a story with a happy ending.

3.- The song has become the soundtrack to the movie "Ten Truths About Love” and four of your other tracks were hand-picked by Director Brian K. Roberts. How was this process? How did you feel when they selected your songs?

Brian K. Roberts found my music and felt like my songs fit with his movie, and I am incredibly grateful that he gave me this opportunity. It has been such a unique and amazing experience to act as a sort of unofficial soundtrack to a film this early on in my career. I think one of my favorite things has been seeing my music put to visuals and seeing how positively everyone has reacted to my music in the film!

4.- Seen in perspective, how would you describe your musical career so far?

Well, I’m a songwriter and an artist, but I’m still figuring out how I want to navigate this crazy music world. I like to experiment and explore different music genres or writing styles and work with other talented musicians and writers to continue to grow in my craft. I think having 5 songs be featured in the film 10 Truths About Love on Tubi has been a significant development in my career, and I hope to take this momentum and continue writing and releasing more music as I grow my fan base.

5.- Do you have any icon that is a reference in musical terms for you?

I have so many musical inspirations it's challenging to choose just one! I grew up listening to iconic songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette, and Taylor Swift. I love songwriters that pay attention to detail in their music. I love poetic and honest lyrics, so that’s what I try to emulate when I write my own music.

6.- Where do you want to head your artistic career?

I want to collaborate more with other artists and writers in the future and explore different musical genres. I think I’ve just started to see my potential as a songwriter and artist, so I want to take every experience as a lesson to continue to grow. Beyond that, I want to embrace the unknown and see where my career takes me. I want people to hear my music and love it as much as I do. I want my songs to be the ones that get stuck in people’s heads. And I want my fan base to grow as I grow as an artist.

7.- Let's talk about the fears that an artist must face because many times we think that they don't have them, but the truth is that as human beings, we all have barriers to break down. What were your fears when starting your career? How do you deal with them?

I think I was afraid of “failure”, whatever that means. There was a time in my life that I felt I should pursue a different, “safer” career path instead of music. However, when the pandemic happened, I started re-evaluating what was important to me and found that music really was my life’s passion.

I realized that I was trying to pick a more stable career path out of fear of failure rather than anything else, so I decided to take that leap of faith and put everything I have into music and songwriting. I think I also manage my fears with the support of my family and friends because I know I can always go to them to talk through any anxieties I have and get good advice.

8.- What other topics would you like to compose about, apart from the darker side of love?

I enjoy writing about relationships and love because I feel like so many different emotions go along with those scenarios. I also feel like I have a good perspective on different relationship dynamics that other people could relate to, which could make fans of my music feel more understood.

Recently, however, since moving back to my hometown of Los Angeles, I have been inspired to write about the idea of getting older. The kind of growing pains you feel when you're “20-something” having that quarter-life crisis where you don’t exactly understand your place in this world. On the other hand, I have also been writing more light and playful songs because I want to show my audience that I also have a fun side.

9.- What is one message that you would like to give to your fans?

I want my fans to know how much their support and engagement mean to me. I want them to feel connected to me through my music, and I think music is so beautiful because a great song can change someone’s perspective and make the specific seem universal. All I can hope is that my songs feel honest and speak into existence some kind of value where there was once some kind of void.

Let’s try some short questions =)

Top 5 of your favorite songs:

This question is so tricky because I feel like my answer changes all the time. I love so many different genres of music too, which makes it difficult to choose! I’ll give my current top 5 songs, but this may change in about a week. 1) Self Control by Frank Ocean 2) Liability by Lorde 3) Love If We Made It by the 1975 4) Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift 5) Strangers by Mt Joy

If not a musician, what would you be?

I actually studied biology in school, so I have a deep appreciation for science and medicine. I like to help people. Now I do that through my music, but I think if that weren’t an option, I would enjoy being a doctor or a nurse.

How do you unwind after a day spent recording?

I like to read when I relax, so I think curling up with my dog (I have a pug named Buster) and a book is one of my favorite ways to unwind.

What would a perfect day be like for you?

I’m super family-oriented, so I love days when my whole family gets together for dinner. I am the youngest of 4 siblings who all live in Los Angeles, so we’re very close. We like doing family taco nights or sushi dinners together, and I find that I’m happiest and most “at home” when I am with them.

What are your interests outside of music?

Since moving back to Los Angeles, my main focus has been work and music, but I still try to make time for self-care. I love reading and poetry, my dog, scrolling through tik tok, puzzles, watching trashy reality television, playing tennis, and spending time with my friends and family.
