In Disney’s upcoming series Electric Bloom, the spotlight shines on friendship, music, and unapologetic self-expression—core values embodied by breakout star Carmen B. Sanchez. At just 17, Carmen has already built an impressive resume that spans singing, dancing, Broadway, and now a high-profile TV role. Raised in a Cuban household and born with rhythm in her veins, she fronts her own band, writes her own music, and brings an electrifying edge to the character of Jade, a music-loving rebel who mirrors Carmen’s own artistic fire.

With Electric Bloom poised to connect with a new generation, Carmen sat down to talk about her journey so far, from childhood performances to crashing out in Cuban improvisation, and what this moment means for her as both an artist and a person.

Tell us a bit about Electric Bloom first, and what drew you to this project.

Electric Bloom revolves around girl power, music, and, most importantly, friendship! The show tells the story of how these 3 girls became the biggest girl band in the world and takes us through the ups and downs of their friendship! What drew me to this project was obviously the idea of being in a girl band and being friends, but also having music to connect with is incredibly fun!!

Jade is described as a music-loving rebel—how much of her is you, and how much did you have to discover to bring her to life?

It was pretty easy for me to portray the character of Jade because production is very open to letting me add a little bit of Carmen to this character. Jade is very similar to me. We both see music not as a hobby but as an escape. Whatever I’m going through, music is the way. And that’s what I love about Jade. We both have a huge love for music and writing lyrics wherever and whenever.

Electric Bloom has been compared to iconic Disney series like Hannah Montana and The Cheetah Girls. What do you think sets it apart for this generation?

I think the fact that they are including themes and stuff that teenagers do these days!! They let us add a lot of slang that kids these days use, so it’ll be a show for the whole family that not only little kids can relate to, but also teens our age.

What was your favorite scene to shoot in the first season, and what made it so memorable?

I would probably say the scene where they let me improv in Spanish. They had me crash out in my Cuban form, and I thought it was the coolest, funniest thing ever.

You’ve been performing since you were eight. How has your relationship with music and performance evolved over the years?

I was born to a very musical and artsy family, so I have had music and dance flowing through my veins since I was a little girl, but eventually, as I started growing, I started to take it more seriously and actually made the move to make this my career and do it for a living.

From La Voz Kids to Broadway to Disney. What’s been the most surprising lesson you’ve learned along the way?

One of the quotes that has stuck with me the most that I got from an older actor on Your Feet was, Don’t take everything personally; not everybody thinks about you as much as you do. And this basically made me go with the flow of things, and just being my true self doesn’t matter where I’m at or what I’m doing; being my authentic self is always the best way to go, and not caring about the negative things others think of me.

You front your own band, Carmen and the Havana Band. How does performing live compare to acting on set?

I feel like when I perform on stage, it's just like playing a character in a scene. You have to have your alter ego and really make the audience believe and feel the song. Also, just making every single word, not just in acting, but also when you’re performing, believable and really connecting with the person who is watching you.

With Electric Bloom about to premiere, how are you feeling heading into this next chapter, and what’s lighting you up creatively right now?

Just the fact that the show is coming out so soon is so surreal to me. From crew to cast, we have all been working so hard and truly added something of our own to make this project as great as it is! Growing up watching Disney and now being in it has truly motivated me and shown me that everything is possible, even being impossible!! So if I could do it, you can do it.
