The Jackson 5, The Von Trapp Family, HAIM, and The Jonas Brothers are all names that come to mind in a game of Scattergories when “Family Musical Group” is next on the list. Should “K” be the letter of the round, you would be remiss not to go for quadruple points with K3 Sister Band members: Kaylen, Kelsey, and Kristen Kassab' Gen Z’s Queens of Tok Tok and melodious mavens. With over 1.7 million followers on social media’s most trending platform, K3 Sisters Band have not only garnered a massive following on Tik Tok but are revolutionizing the world of music.

Three girls raised in Dallas County Texas, the Kassab Sisters were born to musical parents who nurtured their talents from childhood. Fourth generation musicians with a father who plays 12 instruments and a mother with a vocal degree, Kaylen, Kelsey, and Kristen are “connected to the muses,” destined to follow in their ancestral musical footsteps.  Homeschooling gave them a strong foundation as a family and the time to develop their talents. Each two years apart, the girls have never known a life without music. First born Kaylen was the one to lead the way beginning to play the fiddle at just four years old. Kelsey and Kristen followed in her footsteps also taking up the fiddle at 4 and 3 respectively.

One of Kristen’s earliest memories was watching her sisters perform on stage from her stroller. She recalls wondering

“Why in the world am I not up on that stage” and begging the babysitter to let her join them. Which of course, she did.

As the girls grew, so did their knowledge of music. Kaylen picked up the guitar at ten years old and then the harmonica and her other sisters followed suit branching out to their chosen instruments: Kelsey with the guitar and bass and Kristen on mandolin, guitar, bass, and most recently drums. “I come alive when I play the drums,” she exclaims. Not to mention all three contribute exceptional vocals.

Officially touring as “K3 Sisters Band” for the first time in 2009 the Kassab trio started performing at local coffee houses in Dallas, the magical “hot spot” of Texas.  A unique blend of folk, rock, country, and pop K3 Sisters Band is bending the boundaries of genre. Known by fans as “the band that defies description” K3SB is in a league of their own. “When it comes to our genre every person says something different,” Kristen muses, “we’ve invented a new sound.” They are truly a formidable act of multi-talented accomplishment, creative lyricism and ingenuity. Often referred to as “The Female Beatles” the group is influenced by the British rock sensation, Grateful Dead and other iconic bands of the 60’s and 70’s but K3 Sisters Band doesn’t do covers. “In order to pave the way for the future we look to the past to those who have already made a path,” Kaylen expresses. To which Kelsey follows up with “music is a platform to change lives and inject meaning.” “It’s a way to escape the troubles and boredom of reality” Kristen adds playfully gesturing with her hands.

Live shows became the lifeblood of their work, setting them apart from other groups who rely on studio recordings to connect with fans.

They share a favorite Jerry Garcia quote to illustrate their philosophy: “Making a record is like building a ship in a bottle. Playing live music is like being in a rowboat in the ocean.”

The girls write all their own original music and seek to inspire their followers with positive messages.  “We heavily lyricize our songs,” Kristen interjects, “we want you to learn something.”

When the pandemic hit, live events were forced to be canceled causing the group to reassess. “We had noticed our international reach through social media” Kelsey notes, “we originally wanted to start live streaming back in December so I guess you could say the pandemic was as good an excuse as ever to get started.”

“We’ve really pushed the pedal to the metal in quarantine,” Kristen comments, “We’ve connected more on songwriting and have had our biggest year yet!”

Now every week the three go live on their K3 Sisters Band YouTube channel from their home studio to give fans an exclusive and one of a kind virtual concert experience. The interaction is organic and the sisters shout out friends and fans as they jam with intense chemistry and passion. The warmth and charisma of the group is palpable, all three sisters flow in and out of conversation together finishing each other’s sentences.

“We are one mind,” Kristen remarks, and anyone who watches them perform knows this to be true. The seamless unity characteristic of blood connection is a beautiful force of rhythm and harmony. And yet, each sister is distinctly unique in herself. Kaylen the leader, strong and intriguing, Kelsey in the middle grounded, bright, bubbly, and Kristen the youngest and delightfully charismatic self-proclaimed “diva” of the bunch. And of course Mom and Dad have their share of cameos! Just as unique as their individuality is the content they produce. Avid Potterheads, the girls post hilarious Harry Potter videos and even their music is influenced by the magical world. It was actually a tribute post to Harry Potter’s birthday that first caused their Tik Tok to blow up and the trio has continued this theme ever since.  They associate their personality quirks according to Hogwarts House affiliation.

“I’m a Gryffindor because as the oldest I’ve had to be brave even when scared,” Kaylen explains. “And I’m Hufflepuff because I’m easy going, chill, and I love baking” Kelsey continues. Then they both look at Kristen who is already posed with a hand under her chin, one eyebrow raised. “And I” she pauses as if to contemplate her next choice of words, “I’m a woman of class. At first I thought there is NO way I’m a Slytherin then I did some research and instantly I thought oh I am SO a Slytherin.” All three sisters laugh harmoniously. “I’m loyal, shrewd, cunning. I can be your greatest friend or your worst enemy.” Of course Mom completes the squad--a classic Ravenclaw defined by her wisdom, guidance, and coaching. “Our Mom is everyone’s Mom” they express with affection for their beloved matriarch who is adored by the ‘K3 Band Fam,’  their devoted fanbase. In classic K3 fashion the sisters launched their Live Fall Concert Series September with a “Weasley Takeover” Concert featuring messages from the actors who played Fred, George, Ginny, and Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter films. The comments section was lively the entire show full of red, green, yellow, and blue heart emojis signifying Hogwarts House spirit.

Boasting thousands of followers on YouTube and Instagram, the band recently became verified on Tik Tok where they are followed by millions from around the world. “The fans were the ones who pushed for this to happen,” Kaylen credits, “they kept pressuring Tik Tok until one day we woke up and saw the blue checkmark.” Naturally Kelsey baked a “Verification Cake” to commemorate the special occasion. It was Kristen who first stumbled upon the  viral app through friends who were into anime and cosplay. She had fun playing around with voice dubbing. “I sniffed it out and I liked what I smelled” she flashes a grin.  Kelsey pipes in “we wanted to share fun content that showed a different side to us than other social media platforms.“ And yet their Instagram went from 1K to 30K since the beginning of 2020 and their YouTube has a similar following with weekly Live concerts reaching thousands of views each week. “We are a band first,” Kaylen clarifies, “we don’t consider ourselves social media stars, it’s just a tool to promote our music.”

Yet when it comes to promotion you won’t find K3 Sisters Band on Spotify, iTunes or any other music purchasing service.

“Taylor Swift really inspired us to keep the rights to our music,” Kristen explains, “we are in control and we want to show that women can do it.”

The band sells merch on their website K3SistersBand.com where fans can find t-shirts, caps, bomber jackets, beanies and totes with the K3 signature logo and don’t forget to pick out an autographed Quidditch Collection print! You can also stream their latest album “My Time” for free there which was recorded live and features their new toe tapping’ single of the same name as well as Potterhead fan favorite “Queen Bellatrix,” a song about anti-bullying.

“With success comes hate,” Kristen says matter-of-factly. “That’s why we created the K3 Motto.” Then in a practiced manner the girls recite the slogan in turn.  “I will always believe in myself and celebrate my life and the lives of others,” Kaylen starts. “I will respect the music and customs of others as long as they are not harmful to anyone,” Kelsey chimes in. “I will stand against bullying of any kind and choose Love over hate,” Kristen finishes.

Whether it’s writing meaningful lyrics, sharing wholesome content, sending signed photos to fans and actively engaging with followers on their platforms K3 Sisters Band is making a positive impact in a world that needs it more than ever. “We just want to shed light with our music,” Kristen shares. And shine light they have.

In the words of their latest single ‘My Time’:

“Don’t let the bullies take you down…you must stay strong on the battle ground. The haters and the lies will spin you round and round but in the end you’ll be the one to wear the crown.”
